Since November 2002 until now Prof. Eugenio Corti has been Professor of "Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship" at the University of Sannio, and also at the School of Engineering, University Federico II of Napoli. He has been also appointed on February 2004 Director of the “Entrepreneurial Development Center” (C.S.I.A.I.C.) of the Department of of Economics and Social Systems (D.A.S.E.S.), University of Sannio. In this position he will promote technology transfer processes towards local companies, local public organizations, etc. and besides he will organize the necessary initiatives to promote the creation and the development of spin-offs from research. That Centre has been closed on February 2007 and E. Corti become Director of the "Entrepreneurship and Technology Transfer Center" of the company "CE.S.I.TT. s.a.s.", located in Benevento (South of Italy).

At present E. Corti is “Educational Counselor” for Italy of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT-USA) since 1983, and with this role he interviews in October/November of every year few students from Italy, who apply to enter MIT as bachelor.

E. Corti is Member of few International Organization, such as the Education Board of the International Summer School on Entrepreneurship Education, Dauphine Université de Paris (Francia); of the Scientific Board of "European Summer University (ESU) on Entrepreneurship Research and Education" coordinated by the Lyon Business School (France) and the University of Tampere (Finlandia); of the "International Entrepreneurship Academy" Intentac, Jönköping University (Sweden).

E. Corti got his degree in Electrical Engineering at the University Federico II of Napoli (Italy) (110/110 cum laude, 1961), and immediately after the degree he went to MIT (USA) where he got the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in microwaves (MIT-USA, 1963). Back to Italy he was appointed senior researcher in microwaves components, in the Research Center of SELENIA (1963-64). After this industrial experience he decided to enter into the University and he was appointed assistant professor of Physics at the Parthenope University in Napoli, but after two years he went to the University Federico II of Napoli as associate professor of Telecommunications with scientific applications in Electromagnetism (1968-80). During this period he got his title of “Libero Docente” in Applied Electromagnetism (1971).

Around the years 1975-77 E. Corti started to be interested about the impact of the advanced technologies on the development processes of companies, therefore he planned to go back to MIT in the Sloan School of Management, where he was Visiting Fellow for two years to study the innovation management, technology transfer processes, the development of the territories by innovation projects, the design and management of complex technological systems, such as the Science and Technology Parks, collaborating with Prof. Ed Roberts (1980-82).

Back to Italy E. Corti has been appointed associated professors of Innovation Management at the University Federico II of Napoli, but at the same time together with some University colleagues and some industrial managers he founded a company, named T&T Sud srl (few years later T&T SpA), which was involved into designing, offering, managing innovative services of sustaining innovation projects, developing DSS for technology management for SMEs, designing and managing Science and Technology Parks. This company founded few consortia and several high-tech companies, where E. Corti was acting as administrator (1982-92).

Among those new companies Prof. Corti promoted and constituted the company LARA engineering srl, of Venezia, Company of technological services in designing and managing Technological Organizations in Russia. This company was one of the founders of the mixed Italian/Russian Company, by name "Technologies for International Technoparks (TIT) Ltd." of S. Petersbourgh, Russia, of which E.Corti has been the vice-President. This Company has been engaged for few years in promoting, designing, developing the Russian Science and Technology Parks in Russia, and particularly the "Baltic International Technopark of St. Petersbourgh (BIT)". LARA engineering, together with TIT, were liquidated in 1997, and E. Corti received an official diploma from the Minister of the Science and Technology of the Russian Federation (S. Pietroburgo section), which reads: “........ for the eminent contribution in organizing the initiatives of Panrussia 1990-96 in the field of scientific and technology development, of the commercialization of the scientific results, and of the creation of Centers for innovation and support of SMEs” (1992-97).

In the 1993 E. Corti has been nominated President and CEO of the Managing Company, CALPARK SpA, of the Technology Park of Calabria, Cosenza (South of Italy), which has been financed in the start-up phase with 13 million of Euro from the Italian Ministery of University and Research, to promote and manage several innovation projects in the agrofood and ICT sectors (November 1993 - July 1996).

E. Corti was elected member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Association of the Science and Technology Parks (APSTI) (1996-99), then he was elected President of the same Association in June 1999, and also in 2002 for the second mandate until March 2006.

During his role of Professor at the School of Engineering of the University Federico II of Napoli E. Corti was Coordinator of the permanent Commission “Relationships among the School of Engineering and the local Institutions and Companies” (November 1999 - May 2002), and also he was Coordinator of the “Academic Spin-off Program” of the “Science and Technology Pole” of the University Federico II di Napoli, (March 2000 - October 2002). Under this engagement E. Corti promoted several initiatives of sensibility and education inside the above mentioned Program, in which TELECOM Italia Lab (Rome), IPM Group (Arzano – Napoli), FIAT Research Center (Orbassano – Torino) collaborated starting in the spring time of 2000 until October 2002.

E. Corti has been member of the Board of Directors of the “Consorzio EUBEO”, consortium between the University Federico II of Napoli ed a group of companies, (2000-03), and then he was nominated CEO of the Board of Directors of the “Consorzio EUBEO (2003-06).

The major areas of E. Corti's research are Technology Transfer towards the local SMEs, technological innovation management inside an organization, techniques of management applied to traditional industrial sectors, with particular emphasis on the SMEs, Development of DSS for the technology planning and the competitive positions of products; Design, development and management of Technology Parks; Support the creation of new business ideas, which particular emphasis on the knowledge-based spin-offs.

E. Corti together with the following colleagues: P. Formica, C. lo Storto, J. Mitra e J. Murray in November 1999 won the award as the best European Policy Paper for the following paper ”Cluster-muster: Cluster-based innovation and growth management for Euopean SMEs”, presented to the 22nd ISBA National Small Firms Policy and Research Conference, Leeds (UK) in November 1999.

E. Corti from the beginning of his research career published 42 papers and texts in the field of applied electromagnetism and on the communication statistical theory. When he started to be interested to innovation management and entrepreneurship he published until now 11 texts and 151 papers in national and international journals.

MODULE – Knowledge Transfer and New Venture Creation


This module seeks to explain to the participants the complex process of identifying the needs of either knowledge or a suitable amount of financial resources in order to make any kind of innovation inside any organization, including new ventures. Therefore this module aims to illustrate a variety of different procedures to transfer appropriate knowledge and suitable financial resources.

Short description

The starting point of the module is the description of conditions for any local territory to develop, i.e. when the percentage of local companies, which are able to create innovations, is quite large. Therefore it will be important to describe the needs for an organization to realize its innovations in order to have success.

Often such an organization needs both a suitable amount of knowledge and a suitable amount of financial resources. Generally speaking, the required knowledge is an homogeneous set of technical, organizational, managerial, economical, and commercial knowledge, which is usually called “technology”. Therefore any organization, which wants to nurture innovation, needs necessarily “technology” and “financial resources” of an appropriate level.

The different processes of transferring the technical knowledge and, if required, the “complementary knowledge” of the needed technology (i.e. organizational, managerial, economical, commercial, etc. knowledge), will be described on the basis of the degree of maturity of the technical knowledge.

In particular, for different levels of maturity in the area of the technical knowledge, the role of different organizations and institutions will be described, with particular emphasis on the new roles of Universities and of Intermediary Organizations, such as Science and Technology Parks and Business Innovation Centres. The concept of "Knowledge Networking for the territory Development" will also be articulated in this module.

One particular case of technology transfer can be realized inside the Universities and the Public Research Centres by promoting and sustaining new entrepreneurial ideas carried out by under-graduate students, PhD students, researchers, professors, etc.

Case studies where promoting and sustaining new entrepreneurial ideas carried out by people who are still working, or who have already lost their jobs, but want to start a new business, without really knowing how to, will be described.

Since any organization, including new ventures, also needs to acquire the appropriate financial resources in order to develop their innovation, it will be shown in the last part of the module how this second necessary resource can be acquired.

The module will be organized in workshops, suitable classroom assignments (discussion of case studies) and written reports, where the participants, organized in teams of 2-3 people, will describe their entrepreneurial ideas, including technical and economical feasibility studies.

  • demands of services for innovation vs. technical knowledge.

Part 4 – Technology transfer processes

  • scientific collaborations and mature technical knowledge,
  • incubation of entrepreneurial ideas at Universities and Public Research Centres,
  • intellectual properties rights (IPR) at Universities and Public Research Centres,
  • knowledge networking.

Part 5 – Financial resource acquisition

  • financial resource needs for innovation processes,
  • feasibility study of a new entrepreneurial idea (Business Planning),
  • Venture and Seed Capital in Europe,
  • specific funds for new entrepreneurial ideas.

Part 6 – Roles of Intermediary Organizations
