Roland A. Burger, CEO and Chairman of NEMATRIX Research, a consulting company on Telecommunications Strategy with offices in Brussels and Bolzano and extensive knowledge on Network and Satellite Communication Systems and IP Datacasting, Software Engineering.

Former Chief Technology Officer DIGILAB Government Research Center on Digital Innovation. Born in 1969, Italy. Studied Economics and Information Technology at the Catholic University in Milan. Degree in Business Japanese from Bocconi University/JETRO, Milan.

Member of the Club of Rome think tank and project leader on ICT & Sustainable Development. Organizer of the Digital World Conference series together with UNESCO and Club of Rome towards the World Summit on the Information Society in Tunis (WSIS 2003/2005). Organized presentation of the $100 Laptop in Tunis in November 2005 together with Prof. Nicholas Negroponte of MIT Media Lab and the presentation to International Government Representatives. Member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science AAAS, ACM. Member of the Council of the Club of Rome Aurelio PECCEI Foundation, Rome.

MODULE – Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Development

Leveraging Innovation in Low-Cost Technologies for Sustainable Development


The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and expertise to apply entrepreneurial insights to Sustainable Development problems taking advantage of innovation in low-cost technologies

Short description

As seen in other MODULES, in the knowledge economy, the main source of value creation resides in the hyper-mobility of knowledge. The question is, how to bring and how to let the bulk of the coming world-population in developing countries take advantage and take part in this knowledge based economy. How to spot opportunities for innovation, using low-cost approaches, minimizing resource consumption and leveraging efficiency?

Students will learn how to implement new concepts and practice newly acquired skills regarding Low-Cost Technologies in specially designed, integrated Low-Cost Laboratory Environment and will learn how to connect research topics with testing low-cost business ideas and to "simulate" them (via other Modules).

Students organized in teams are required to write a “business plan” whose main contents are:

* Concept description of a low-cost-Technology for sustainable Development-based business idea
* Value proposition (to customer and company)
* Commercial potential
* Competitive advantage
* Feasibility
* Revenue
* Long term strategy

Workshops with leading authorities and guest speakers are planned to be conducted regularly.

* Theoretical underpinnings of the notion of "sustainable development"
* Sustainability problems of industrial countries
* Sustainability problems of developing states and economies in transition
* Sociology of knowledge around sustainability
* Economic and technological dimensions
* Philosophical and value dimensions

Part 2 – Innovation in Low-Cost

* The role of Efficiency gains in raw materials use, energy consumption
* Factor 4 and Factor 10
* Technology areas for Low-Cost: Education, e-Health, Services
* The role of networks: Low-Cost Technology laboratories and networks

Part 3 – Entrepreneurship

* Small businesses and entrepreneurial growth companies in Low-Cost Technologies
* Developing countries entrepreneurship.
* The incubation process in the Developing world
* The incubation process in the Developed world
* How to bridge the two worlds
