Mr MATLA has over 18-years on-the-ground experience in mainland China (and in a broader context Asia). He has a deep and sophisticated understanding, both commercially and culturally, of the greater China region, plus a vast network of commercial and social relationships within the marketplace.

Mr MATLA first started travelling to China in 1990, he is fluent in Chinese (Mandarin), and has held a number of positions (commercial, non-for-profit, and government related) in mainland China since moving there to live full time in 1993.

Positions held include Post Manager for the Australian Trade Commission and Chief Representative for an Australian trade and technology consulting company in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province (1993-1996); Economic/Political Research Officer at the Australian Embassy, Beijing (1996-1997); Executive Director of an education investment company (1998); through to establishing his own business and investment advisory firm representing GNS from Singapore, an accounting and business advisory firm from Perth, and a fiduciary company from Malaysia (1998-2004).  The business that Mr MATLA established back in 1999 merged to form GNS China in 2004, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of GNS International Limited, a non-listed Singaporean based public company.

Mr MATLA is presently the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of GNS China (Beijing and Hong Kong), an entrepreneurial investment and corporate advisory firm that facilitates and provides corporate advisory services on cross-border investment transactions related to the greater China market (and Mongolia).  GNS China is a member of the Australia China Business Council, China International Alternative Investment Association, CBEX (China Beijing Equity Exchange), China-Australia Chamber of Commerce (AustCham Beijing), and China Mergers & Acquisitions Association.

Mr MATLA has a wealth of experience, including strong management and corporate advisory skills.  He understands the ‘ins’ and ‘outs’ of the China market entry process from an analytical and practical perspective.  Through his extensive experience across the greater China market (and in a broader context Asia), he is not only able to understand where opportunities are, but also how to create them.  Mr MATLA provides strategic and practical advice and implementation services to a wide range of clients (mainly focusing cross-border) in relation to negotiations, mergers and acquisitions, and opportunity & capital matching, through to corporate and investment structuring.

Mr MATLA has been the longest serving Director of the China-Australia Chamber of Commerce (AustCham Beijing), serving 13 years since it was legally established back in 1996.  AustCham Beijing, being a not-for-profit organisation registered and approved under the authority of China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs, and the peak body representing Australian business interests in Beijing.  At AustCham Beijing, he served as Vice Chairman (2010-2011); Deputy Chairman (2008-2010); and Treasurer (2003-2008); as well as previously chairing a number of committees and working groups.  Mr MATLA was also invited to be an official judge of the AustCham Australia-China Business Awards in 2010 (in Shanghai), 2009 (in Beijing), and 2003, 2004, and 2008 (in Hong Kong).

Mr MATLA holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Curtin University of Technology (Australia), and an International Company Directors Course Diploma from the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Mr MATLA is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors; Fellow of Intentac (International Entrepreneurship Academy); Standing Director of the China International Alternative Investment Association (China); Member of The Global Foundation (Australia), Committee Member of the Beijing Cricket Club; and a director on a number of client company’s boards.
